Another great day of fun with my brother and sister-in-law. We toured the Central Michigan University biological station in the morning, then a quick stop at the lighthouse in Gull Harbor and a short hike, then home for a quick lunch, then off to spend the rest of the afternoon and early evening kayaking on Font Lake. Ending with Jim making us all dinner (which was great except for the pizza stone that broke in the oven). As we drove into Gull harbor, we saw this tugboat with hundreds of gulls swooping all around it. No idea why there was such a cloud of them, but they made us see why it's called Gull Harbor! (NOTE: See Janine's comment below -- explains why the gulls are so intrigued by this boat! Skip is one of the island's key fishermen and owner of the fish shop where we can get whitefish freshly caught each morning. They also have great smoked whitefish and smoked trout).
Thank you all so much for the wonderful response to yesterday's Lovely Lily, which landed on PP today. I'm thrilled!!
Today was a good day.
I think that is Skip D's fishing boat, he's most likely coming into the harbor with the day's catch. The gulls always follow the fishing boats like that when they have a boatload of fish (see what you know when you live in town?). Nice capture of the catch! haha
Very interesting shot, love the vivid colours and composition. That is a lot of seagulls but if it´s a fishing boat like Janine suspects, then it´s understandible. That blue and those white clouds against makes great contrast and the overall feeling is very pleasing, I could see this framed in a wall
This is such an interesting photo and narrative, Taffy. I feel like I don't know BI at all . . . you are showing us so much through your album! Next summer. With camera. (and no broken shoulder to limit me . . .)
Sounds like a fun filled day!! I can't believe nobody has fav'd this shot yet! Let me be the first :) I luv the layering of colors throughout your shot, and that cloud of birds is beautiful!! Your work is great too :)
really wonderful flurry of gulls. I've seen them follow shrimp boats on the US southern coast and they are persistent fishers. the shrimp boat nets are usually loaded with gull appetizer fish as well as the shrimp!
This is such a cool picture and great moment! (Also, I think I have successfully broken about three pizza stones in my life before giving up. Don't see the point.)
