And so Year 2 begins! It's bww (black and white Wednesday for all you newbies) and my get-pushed-challenge from @iwatts was, "seeing as a lot of your photography is night time or on the darker edge, I would like you to explore high key photography / lighting and see what you can do with it."
So I studied some of Rachel's posts, as her high key is among the best to learn from ( @rachelwithey ) and read a little bit, and then thought about options for today. It had to be near our house as the snow is ridiculous and I still have a cold, and it had to have bw potential. I also wanted to capture the idea of continuous snow in an urban setting (as opposed to a lovely walk through the woods). So, here's the result. One thing I learned from reading (online sources - not sure where this quote is actually from anymore):
"An image which is pitched in a high-key overall but which has strong elements of dark contrast may be considered high-key, but it may be more proper to consider it as using high-key technique in combination with a high-contrast graphic style." Ian, does this fit the challenge from your perspective?
A low-key interpretation of a snowy day is in my extras album: http://365project.org/taffy/the-also-ran-ph/2014-01-01
Taffy..a question..as an Ace member does your albums stay the same after the year is up? You get to keep all your images in all 3 albums and just continue on?
@mzzhope I received a notice a few weeks ago about renewing and did that, so nothing changed. I'm guessing as long as you're an Ace member (which to me is the best $20.00 / year investment I've ever made!!), your three albums just keep going.
@taffy that is great to know Taffy! And I agree! The best 20 investment ever!SO glad you are staying.I am looking SO foward to your work from your Japan trip!
@mzzhope Thanks so much! In my dreams, the people that are on the trip are MY friends from 365! But I know it will be fun with Junko and Michael at the helm. I still can't get over that Jim gave this to me as a present!
What a generous supportive man you have!I seriously would have considered it if I were not going to California in a few weeks, I am sad that my trips to Mexico and Italy were pre 365.I have learned SO much since then,I want a do over! Lol
@mzzhope Where in CA? Tons of photo opportunity there for sure!! I know what you mean -- any travel I've done now seems impoverished when it comes to the photos I would now be taking instead of those I did! Oh well...future albums await us!
@mzzhope Wow -- that looks like a fantastic trip!! What a great opportunity to practice shots of moving butterflies. And a perfect time of year to be in CA too. I'll look forward to your photos from there!
Love this...and I think....with my limited knowledge, that it fits perfectly to your challenge. Love the contrasts and light, the composition is also awesome!!! Great job and Happy Happy New Year!
Oh love this, and not only cos of all the snow ( which we don´t yet have) and light, but also all the great simplistic soft lines that are very pleasing to the eye, there´s something really captivating in this and it´s a great respomse to your challenge
I can see the trace of snow falling, that is amazing. I thought that you have to use slow shutter speed but you still got the strong dark lines - I need to try this too (without snow though)
Love the lines and patterns - looks like you nailed it to me!! A great snow shot - different from the norm - we can rely on you Taffy!! A wonderful way to start year 2!! Fav!!
I like the combination of lights and shadows with the stairs structure. The vanishing point lines bring me across the frame doing a "zig zag" like I was climbing stairs.
@rachelwithey - thanks for your help via your postings!
Very linear and graphic. Great for your theme.
