I've been working on this photo off and on since returning from France. Thanks to several 365ers for your support along the way! This was taken in the cathedral in Vaison la Romaine. I'm still working on the b&w version.
Thank you for your wonderful response to my posting of the small plane, view from the small plane, and seagulls taking off. I appreciate your ongoing support so much! Seagull shot was pure luck -- I was stalking the four gulls to get a better closeup and they took off in front of me, when my camera was all ready to snap. I sort of felt bad for disturbing them, but now, not so much!
Is this HDR? I like how the detail is kept throughout the image bit is darker in the foreground do eye is lead through the door. Was there a window the other side? It looks like light is falling onto the wall through one.
This is such a beautiful shot, Taffy. I love all the detail that can be seen on the other side of the door and not all washed out by daylight. Very nicely done, makes me feel like I am there, has that 3D look to it. FAV
I think you've perfected it - I often feel that when you leave a church you walk out into the sun it's really big transition from cool space into a bright one.
Really great end result, Taffy. As you know, this composition, for me, is perfect: the steps leading through the open door to the view outside, which is the obvious main attention of the picture. You have really nailed the exposure and contrast of this main feature perfectly in your final version! Have to fave it!
This is beautiful! I don't know if you really need a black and white version. One of the reasons why I like this version so much is that the "color" is really only a hint of color. The low key lighting in the foreground and the lighter room through the door are such a nice balance. In my theater arts days we'd call this a "birth image"- going from dark to light as one does when you are born. In this case as it's tied in with a cathedral, it has a nice spiritual significance too. All that to say it's a powerful image as is- and a fav for me!
It's great the way you've got the detail of the textures into the dark parts of the building, and the contrasting tones are wonderful. Terrific processing. Is this an HDR image? Fav.
@dolphin@newbank Hi Molly and Ruth -- yes, this was done via 3 images combined in Photomatix HDR processing. It was the only way to do it as the light was so different in the interior and through the door. But I wanted it to look as natural as possible despite the HDR processing so am glad you had to ask!
I like this shot Taffy as you have retained detail in the foreground brickwork while correctly exposing the scene through the door. I always have trouble with this kind of shot and normally end up with a black silhouette. Is this HDR as Ruth asked? Is that the answer to thus problem?
Brilliant composition and exposure. I had a go at the HDR method you mentioned and the continuous shooting really helps. The only issue is that I use the nik collection and I'm struggling to get a very natural look using hrd efex. So I need to do some research on it before I try and post anything, thanks again for the help.
Lovely! I saw this photo first while at work and did not have time to comment. Then I saw it again on my iPhone and still no time to comment. Finally, the weekend, I return again to this photo. It's memorable and draws one into it. Fav!
