Cathedral Door by taffy

Cathedral Door

I've been working on this photo off and on since returning from France. Thanks to several 365ers for your support along the way! This was taken in the cathedral in Vaison la Romaine. I'm still working on the b&w version.
Thank you for your wonderful response to my posting of the small plane, view from the small plane, and seagulls taking off. I appreciate your ongoing support so much! Seagull shot was pure luck -- I was stalking the four gulls to get a better closeup and they took off in front of me, when my camera was all ready to snap. I sort of felt bad for disturbing them, but now, not so much!
Beautiful shot, Taffy!!! Looking forward to b&w, too!

Absolutely stunning shot Taffy an instant fav !

The POV and the composition make me want to walk thru that door to see what is on the other side. Great shot, Taffy!

Greast one, love the idea of a open door and how light the other side is, it´s like two different worlds

The open door welcomes the viewer inside for a look around.Great detail on the interior. walls.

Great shot, very nicely done

Is this HDR? I like how the detail is kept throughout the image bit is darker in the foreground do eye is lead through the door. Was there a window the other side? It looks like light is falling onto the wall through one.

Beautiful composition.

Great DOF. Fav

You're beckoned into this by the light on the other side of the door! It makes the viewer want to explore beyond the door. Absolutely wonderful. Fav

This is such a beautiful shot, Taffy. I love all the detail that can be seen on the other side of the door and not all washed out by daylight. Very nicely done, makes me feel like I am there, has that 3D look to it. FAV

I think you've perfected it - I often feel that when you leave a church you walk out into the sun it's really big transition from cool space into a bright one.
June 5th, 2014
Really great end result, Taffy. As you know, this composition, for me, is perfect: the steps leading through the open door to the view outside, which is the obvious main attention of the picture. You have really nailed the exposure and contrast of this main feature perfectly in your final version! Have to fave it!

Beautiful composition!
June 5th, 2014
One word excellent
June 5th, 2014
Exquisite shot. Great composition and I love how the eye is attracted through the dark to the light.
June 5th, 2014
BTW FAV.
June 5th, 2014
Wonderful framing and that is one difficult shot to get exposure correct - you nailed it!
June 5th, 2014
I love the shots where one is looking out from a darker (but still visible) location into the light.
June 5th, 2014
I love how my eye wanders up the steps and then looks around the lit area. Fab image.
June 5th, 2014
Perfect composition and processing - the steps lead you into the picture
June 5th, 2014
Awesome shot

Lovely composition and processing
June 5th, 2014
Beautiful. I like how the far room is much brighter than the one you took the shot in.
June 5th, 2014
Wonderful how we are taken up the steps and through the door by the detail on the outside wall .
June 5th, 2014

Nice shot, it makes you want to go and see what's there.
June 5th, 2014
Perfect lighting! Great shot

This is beautiful! I don't know if you really need a black and white version. One of the reasons why I like this version so much is that the "color" is really only a hint of color. The low key lighting in the foreground and the lighter room through the door are such a nice balance. In my theater arts days we'd call this a "birth image"- going from dark to light as one does when you are born. In this case as it's tied in with a cathedral, it has a nice spiritual significance too. All that to say it's a powerful image as is- and a fav for me!

the work paid off, fav
June 5th, 2014
It's great the way you've got the detail of the textures into the dark parts of the building, and the contrasting tones are wonderful. Terrific processing. Is this an HDR image? Fav.
June 5th, 2014
Nice shot! The way the dark area leads to the well-lit area is really cool!

@dolphin @newbank Hi Molly and Ruth -- yes, this was done via 3 images combined in Photomatix HDR processing. It was the only way to do it as the light was so different in the interior and through the door. But I wanted it to look as natural as possible despite the HDR processing so am glad you had to ask!
June 5th, 2014
Wonderful! Love the frame of the shot!
June 5th, 2014
I like this shot Taffy as you have retained detail in the foreground brickwork while correctly exposing the scene through the door. I always have trouble with this kind of shot and normally end up with a black silhouette. Is this HDR as Ruth asked? Is that the answer to thus problem?
June 5th, 2014
Wonderful capture ...
June 6th, 2014
A wonderful pov
June 6th, 2014
@pamknowler Yep -- it's HDR or I never would have been able to get the lighting right.
June 6th, 2014
Amazing composition and processing. The open door invites you to come through.
June 7th, 2014
Brilliant composition and exposure. I had a go at the HDR method you mentioned and the continuous shooting really helps. The only issue is that I use the nik collection and I'm struggling to get a very natural look using hrd efex. So I need to do some research on it before I try and post anything, thanks again for the help.

Lovely! I saw this photo first while at work and did not have time to comment. Then I saw it again on my iPhone and still no time to comment. Finally, the weekend, I return again to this photo. It's memorable and draws one into it. Fav!
