Vickey, my Beaver Island photo buddy, and I squeezed in a wonderful little hike and nature photo opportunity at Oliver's Point on Western Shores. Filled with hover flies, baby frogs, a golden retriever puppy named Tony who happened by with his owner, a few mozzies but not bad, and this odd creature. It appeared to be coming out of the shell below, or maybe it was just holding onto it like a talisman. Anyway, best viewed large for the details. I had my zoom, but not my macro -- frustrating!!
Ooopps! Sorry Taffy - got my names mixed up (blame old age!) But congratulations on your sunset making No 6 - it was a beautiful capture too :) I read frogs in your title write up and had a definite senior's moment!
Good eye, spotting this green insect on his brown exoskeleton amid the browns and greens of the ground. And ain't that how it goes, needing a macro lens instead of the zoom you've got with you. Well captured despite the challenge.
@lyndemc I can't take credit for finding this guy -- Vickey is amazing at locating teeniest of things and she's the one who found it. Then we sat and photographed for about 10 minutes. We must each have had 100 shots of this guy from all different angles...but she was smart and had brought a close up lens. Lesson: never go out with only one lens!!
Great capture even without your macro lens!! That's always my problem as I can't carry all my lenses and have to make a decision before I go out as to what I will be looking for. I am off on holiday on Friday to the North West coast on the edge of the Lake District. Hope I have the right lenses with me!! LOL!!
Great find Taffy, well spotted whomever found it. Pity about the macro, but the zoom's done a pretty good job. The bug looks very like what Aussies call a cicada. They make a sound a bit like crickets, by strumming their legs to and fro on their ridged abdomens.
"...a Golden Retriever puppy named ____..." You know I need details like that!
Could this be a cicada having emerged from its shell? I'm not sure about their life cycle (except for the 17-year thing)...interesting critters that fill the summer air with their cacophony!
@Weezilou Oops...added Tony's name -- the puppy. I think it might have been a cicada or a katydid. I'm toying with going back there later today with better lighting, and with my new bug protecting shirt (hood, sleeves, face protector -- so exciting!).
@taffy :) Thanks! I recall mosquitos being your nemesis last summer, and it's the same here! Though only 3:15, I might light the citronella candles out on the back deck. We waited all last fall to have it completed, and we can't let the Marauding Mossies run us off now! Perhaps you should share a selfie... At least you won't be covered with red welts!
@Weezilou It might be worthy of a selife -- it's such a cool shirt! But makes you look a bit like you're with some disease control center! Yes, put out things to stop them from bothering you so you can enjoy your deck!!!
