Potters Hands by taffy

Potters Hands

The last posting from last week's focus in my mentor group on B&W using natural lighting. This was taken during a demonstration at the Van Briggle Festival in Colorado Springs. This week is about b&w using artificial light - very challenging!

Here's my last one from last week's focus. Now that I'm back, I'm going to tackle artificial lighting tomorrow. Couldn't get it together today -- for some reason this feels really daunting.

Love the tight crop on his hands and arm. The clay on his hands is so interesting.

I'm scared too! My plan had been to try today but woken to find 2 poorly kids so it'll have to wait now. I like the focus just on the hands and the textures of the paint.

September 15th, 2015
A super monochrome capture. Fav!! 😃
September 15th, 2015
I love how this photo shows the work of the potter as well as the messy job it requires.
September 15th, 2015
This is terrific. Like the mud, the smoothness of the pot, the slight motion blur of the wheel. Even the bright area top left seems to bring the eye back in.
September 15th, 2015
I love how you've 'stopped' the hands but the wheel is still moving.
September 15th, 2015
wonderful image.... fantastic movement on the wheel
September 15th, 2015
Beautiful shot. The lighting is fantastic. I like the sense of movement too.
September 15th, 2015
That certainly does show how messy a job it is. I like the smoothness of the pot contrasting with the textures on the hands and forearms.
September 15th, 2015
Awesome shot
September 15th, 2015
This is super. FAV
September 15th, 2015
This wheel would be going round quite fast so this is a great capture of the creativity of the potter!
September 15th, 2015
Lovely in b&w Taffy!
September 16th, 2015
What a job on the textures! - you can feel the clay on his hands! Really nice shot.
September 16th, 2015
Super shot, love his hands caked with clay.
September 16th, 2015
The splattered, wet clay on his hands really grabs the attention.
September 16th, 2015
I really enjoy the spinning motion of the pot and the wheel, contrasted with the steady, clay-soaked hands of the potter. Lovely in b&w.
September 16th, 2015
@jgpittenger Thanks Jane -- I took a lot of him from different angles -- nice that he didn't mind. When he was done with the pot, which I thought was beautiful, he sliced it in half and showed us all the flaws. I was shocked! He thought the wall was too thin - I thought it looked great and delicate.
September 16th, 2015
I really like the slight blur of motion showing the pot was going around, and those messy hands are so eye catching. A lovely shot.
September 16th, 2015
This is wonderful....I love your composition and the sense of movement conveyed!! B&W is a great choice! FAV!!
September 16th, 2015
Great shot
September 16th, 2015
Super shot.
September 16th, 2015
I thought I had commented on this? How strange! I love this Taffy and have looked at it a few times and only just now realised my comment is not there. The textures on his hands are great and the wheel spinning fantastic! I was checking your exif info and am amazed how deep the dof is with your setting. A wonderful capture with no flash - you must have such steady hands not to blur the whole shot! Fav!
September 16th, 2015
Wonderful shot. Fav!
September 16th, 2015
Wonderful shot.
September 16th, 2015
Absolutely gorgeous photo - big FAV
September 16th, 2015
Love this- actually used to love "throwing a pot"- but haven't in ages! You did a great job with the lighting and capturing the action without too much blur. Excellent shot- fav!

Hi Taffy! Just checking to ask if you would like to take a guest spot on Thursday for the Toy Group this week. Have a few things going on this week and not sure if I'll be able to get to my post. The theme is World Toursim Day. With the great locations around you, you may have some fun with this one. Let me know if you can do it. I completely understand if you're busy this week too though.

@cjphoto Sure, I'm sure P3 would enjoy the outing! Is the password for uploading still the same? If not, I can send you the file and photo for posting, but it may be faster if I do it.
September 21st, 2015
@taffy - Awesome! Thank you so much Taffy! Yep, the password is the same so you should be able to get in with no problem. Thanks again!
