Another shot from Oak Park's Frank Lloyd Wright territory. This in front of one of the FLW 1900s homes, across from what was his home and studio. Thanks for your visits and lovely comments on the other photos from this photo walk.
I am so enjoying all the FLW photographs. He had such a wonderfully distinctive style. I got to visit the Robie House several years ago, and I am amazed at how similar so many of the features are in these two houses. Love the lines!
@radiogirl There may be an open house at some point where some homes are open to the public, but all but FLW's actual house and studio are private homes. One of the ones on the tour belongs to one of our colleagues and his wife and we've been lucky enough to go to department events there. I'm always impressed with their attention to detail, from lamps to area rugs to furniture. I would love to see the other homes as I would guess each one is quite amazing inside.
Did he design this wall? The ornate work on the bottom of those balls does not look like his style to me! But I do love the pattern they create and the texture of the black and white.
@olivetreeann I don't know...he designed the home, but there isn't anything about the wall that surrounds the house -- neither crediting someone else or noting it was FLW's design.
@taffy I would have to agree with that! It's definitely a part of the design. Such an interesting departure for him, but maybe this was at the request of the home-owner. Maybe they wanted a reference to Baroque style architecture! At any rate, it's intriguing to see him go "frilly" (or at least have a hint of it) in contrast to his typical sleek, linear design. Thanks for the link!
I was photographing this long building - Fogg Memorial at Berwick Academy and I said to myself - wish Taffy were here to help me figure this out. Trees and Lamp post gotta go back again and try. Love artisanship like this.
I know this wall, I think it is in my project somewhere. This is my neck of the woods so to speak, I am on the Chicago side of North Avenue in Galewood.
Do you actually get to go into some of these houses or are they privately owned?
I was looking at other photos of the house itself and posted it in Flickr - https://www.flickr.com/photos/taffyraphael/21369071129/in/album-72157644033608065/ In the photo, you can see the fence design is integral to the design of the house, so yes, I'd say it's a FLW fence too!
