It started snowing this afternoon and it's still coming down. I gave it a try -- put a black cloth on a table outside on the deck, and with my macro, took about 200 shots. Then, going through them, deleted 197 of them. Of the remaining three that had potential, this was the best. It was so cold that it was hard to want to stay outside to set up tripod, etc., so this was handheld. High ISO meant lots of noise too. And macro means that not only the snowflake, but every texture in the cloth gets picked up. But, at least this one is clearly a snowflake and not a blob of white!
Great work and clarity - and admirable determination and staying power too!
Would love to give this a try but there's the small problem of not having any snow...
This is on my bucket list so when we were in Iceland and it started to snow I tried to snap some but they were all melting too quickly. Fabulous shot Taffy.
This is an amazing shot!! At first I thought it was an ornament or something more permanent than an actual snowflake... Wow!! Well worth the 200 shots though right?! :) :)
Sounds a bit like my attempt at water crowns! This is beautiful and as Chantal says would love to give it a go if it would only snow. Barely had any since I started my 365 Project nearly 3 years ago! Just wondering is this actually 2 snowflakes? Looks like a 2nd one resting on top right. either way it's beautiful, fav.
@paulaw Great eye, Paula! Yes, it has a second snowflake that is essentially perpendicular to the main one. So you can see it's 'edge' toward the right in this shot. Thanks! It was fun trying to do it - it almost makes me want it to snow again for a second attempt but with the camera on a tripod and an external shutter release set up. But when it's snowing and wet, that motivation goes away quickly!!
That's a funny thing about cloth backdrops. Clear windows too can become quite filthy! I'm just amazed that this is really truly what snowflakes look like.
It was snowing lightly here today as well and I was tempted to get my tripod out and set it up with my macro- but I was just too lazy! And the wood stove was so nice and warm. So good for you to have even done this. They're always so pretty!
Wow - This is just wonderful - enjoyed reading the commentary with it - would love to get a shot like this - guess I need some snow, first! You really got terrific detail in this flake.
I'd say that both you AND the snowflake won the lottery today! It's a beauty, and imagine how lucky it was in its short life to have been singled out by you, one of 365's favorite photographers, to post this gorgeous portrait! Well done! Your time spent in the freezing cold produced a beauty!
@Weezilou I love how you think about this snowflake and that it is now immortalized. Really great way to think about it and makes me think I should post the other one that was okay! Thanks for the visit!
Would love to give this a try but there's the small problem of not having any snow...
