Pall is the BEST tour guide ever!!!! The day started with sunrise...amazing day but will describe some other time. Exhausted and not getting to hotel til 10:00, at dinner he casually said, 'we may have an opening for northern lights.' We would NEVER have known what we were looking at...but he did an 'emergency stop' and had us set up in near a large field. Quickly, he advised us about settings and then showed us how to take continuous shots so we could eventually create an 8 second movie. And this was our "practice night" -- there may be 2 more opportunities! And he did this despite knowing he would not reach his home until after 1:00 a.m. Maybe the most exciting thing I've ever photographed, even more than the Milky Way which had been my most exciting. I LOVE Iceland!!!!
Thank you for your comments/favs -- all greatly appreciated. With 15 hour days I will be totally behind in commenting so won't apologize every day. I'll catch up next week on return. Internet is spotty, but more is just barely keeping up with downloading.
Junko's image from last night (clearly standing next to one another!): https://365project.org/jyokota/365/2017-03-21
Amazing. I watched the data from my corner of the world, but no matter how big the storm got the clouds would not relent. Im so glad you got such an amazing shot and shared.
OMG this is at the top of my bucket list!! Such a breathtaking moment for you all!! Your guide sounds brilliant - that really is class to set you up ready for this spectacle!! Wish I was there!! LOL!! Can't wait to see even more!! Huge Fav from your very jealous friend!! LOL!! Fav!
Wow, amazing. This is something I would love to see, but maybe I will get to see the Southern Lights one day. They are visible in Tasmania.
What a fabulous experience, I would be speechless. a huge fav.
Terrific capture, I think the Northern Lights are one of the most satisfying things to photograph, seeing them is just so exciting and then the photo is usually even better. So jealous that you have seen these in Iceland, I saw them in Norway but from a boat so even with a tripod we didn't achieve the clarity you have done. Looking forward to seeing some more!
Such an incredible photo of the magical lights! I'm thrilled for you that you and Junko are having this fantastic experience. I've seen them once in Alaska and I will never forget the wonder of the colors dancing in the sky! I hope to see them again, next time with a camera ready.
Big wow! And as I said to Junko - very envious but also very excited about your trip to Iceland. I'm enjoying it all through your lenses. Keep 'em coming - this one is amazing.
@jnorthington That would be a small world event, wouldn't it? But no, we (Junko and I and our husbands) hired a guide for the four of us -- it's really been ideal for us.
OK..we're there!!! PLEASE (PLEASE...seriously!) ask Pall for his card! I can see the possibility of a trip there next summer! For some time, Ken's said he'd love to go and that the fares from Halifax are good. You two have provided a tipping point I think!
@Weezilou Our guide -- who I would HIGHLY recommmend -- is Paul Jokull Petursson -- here's his Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/palljokull
I will send you his email address off-line when I know which one is the one he uses. We can't rave about him enough -- he helped us plan the whole trip via email and basically, we have ended up putting ourselves completely in his hands. He hasn't steered us wrong!
@taffy Thank you SO much! Ken will be just as happy to receive this news and I am, and truly, you're a gem not to brush this off, but to share it! It's the best way we know to find people who won't disappoint! Continue to have a wonderful time, and I'm loving the photos you and Junko are posting! ("HI" to the men in your lives!)
We are so incredibly lucky that just randomly selecting ONE image each -- were both winners! We couldn't have imagined before we came that we'd be so lucky. Let's hope for another!
@gamelee Lee, thanks for the lovely comments and favs on my shots today -- greatly appreciated! What made you go with 4:3 (or is that the same as crop)? I'm dreaming of a mirrorless full frame but $ is certainly an obstacle!
So exciting to see this. I just returned from Antarctica recently, so I can relate to your excitement. I was in Iceland in 1973, right out of college and remember it being like on the moon. My husband and I are planning a trip there in the next few years.
Pleased you chose this as your favourite of the year Taffy, I was taking a break from 365 when you posted it, so delighted to see it now. It really is a stunning image.
We saw the northern lights on our trip to Iceland last summer, the sky wasn't really dark so the colours were less intense, but still an incredible sight.
How awesome! As many others have said, it is on my bucket list to see the Northern Lights. I have heard they are tricky to photograph, and this came out great! I also would love to visit Iceland.
