Ghost Haunts Vaison-la-Romaine Square? by taffy

Ghost Haunts Vaison-la-Romaine Square?

So creeped out! Notice the ghost? I took this photo of the empty square after the rain mostly as a document shot. We'd had a lovely lunch with our friends, a rest, then dinner and evening at their place. No pictures so Jim patiently waited while I photographed a few spots on our walk back. In uploading, I saw what looks like a woman's reflection in the lower left, yet there is no reason for it to be there! It has to be a reflection of something...but there is no visible explanation. Had to post before going to sleep -- any thoughts on what might have caused this phenomenon other than a ghost roaming the square??
Thanks for the well wishes for a good trip. It certainly has gotten off to a wonderful start!
Whats more a naked woman... looks stunning on black ..

Wonderful image!

Great find and the wet floor is a plus. Before seing description and tags, I've not point this place on your city. I was thinking about Paris or Barcelona ... ;)

Great night shot!

Seems a bit spooky - hope someone can provide an alternative explanation. Great photo though.

No explanation from my end, but I really like the wet pavement and reflections. I like the ghost also.

To me it looks like a statue of some kind. Using the magnifier there is a statue on top of the fountain and I am wondering if this is the source of the reflection.

Tom
Hmmmm ! why not a mystery! Gereat capture of the wetness after the rain and the reflections
May 12th, 2017
OMG, the hairs on the back of my neck are all standing up. How weird is that??? But you've got a wonderful shot regardless and the mysterious woman adds a real frisson of the unknown.

Ghosts must walk for health, too.
May 12th, 2017
Maybe there is an answer in the history of that spot.
May 12th, 2017
Ghost for sure
May 12th, 2017
Stunning low light picture.

A lovely nighttime capture until you mentioned the strange small statue/ghost/image. Spooky and wild to discuss with friends!

Superb low-key image...looks excellent on black...

So interesting, you have had David and I intrigued. I think we have figured what it is though. We have checked out Google maps and photos of the area and if you look at the link below http://sablethouse.blogspot.com.au/2016/03/some-sights-of-vaison-la-romaine-and.html
About 16 pictures down on this page shows the scene you have photographed. The picture is called Place Montfort Vaison-la-Romaine October 2015 and you will see small fountains coming up from the ground just up from the main fountain. There is probably a small ground fountain off to the right of your picture and you have probably captured the lens flare from this image. Hope that all makes sense.

I still like the idea of it being a ghost though. Well spotted. fav

de Chirico couldn't have done any better!! quite a surreal quality to this image

PS What did we do before Google!
May 12th, 2017
@onewing Thanks Babs! Very helpful as always. I also just read the blog and he captures this town well. Our hotel is in the corner of the square, so I should be able to observe the strange reflection more closely tonight.

Quite fascinating reading this thread! I love this on black.
May 12th, 2017
Definitely a ghost. Looks like my old Aunt Maude who was murdered by a short sighted werewolf while wandering around the Transylvania cemetery looking for slightly warm bodies.
May 12th, 2017
A fav just to keep Aunt Maude over in your neck of the woods and well away from here
May 12th, 2017
That looks so spooky, how intriguing!
May 12th, 2017
It looks so weird at first glance, doesn't it! It's probably lens flare catching some combination of the water and the lamps, but your explanation is fun!

Sam
oooohhhhh spooky!!!! I love it - let's just leave it as a ghost story :)

Fabulous on black :)

Ha! Very spooky. Great shot.
May 12th, 2017
Wow, I almost didn't notice the ghost at first. Now I have goose bumps. Wonderful capture and I love the lighting and reflections on the wet ground.

Lovely night-time capture

Fantastic ghostly, night shot! Fav
May 12th, 2017
Oh yes I think it must be a ghost Taffy!! So exciting - just remember to look behind you when you are out in the square tonight!! LOL!! Fav!
May 12th, 2017
@pamknowler We checked tonight -- no evidence of the ghost or the ghostly source!
May 12th, 2017
@taffy Even spookier!! Love it!!
May 12th, 2017
Wow very spooky!
May 13th, 2017
Eerily cool!

Loads of atmosphere. Fav

Fun mystery reflection! It's fun to tell stories with it and it's also fun to figure out what's really going on. Beautiful plaza and night shot.
May 13th, 2017
@ukandie1 I'm channeling you while here -- trying to do more people watching. None worthy of posting yet, but know you are influencing me as we sit on the square watching the world go by!
May 13th, 2017
Hope that's a friendly ghost! Cool effect.
May 13th, 2017
Intriguing! Haven't a clue what it is and would love to go there to investigate - I love trying to work stuff like that out. :-D
Good night capture, the reflections (including Mr/Ms Spectre!) and pools of light are appealing. I particularly like the way the leaves of the tree are illuminated.
May 13th, 2017
Oh, so wild... from your shot, I can find no possible explanation, unless it is the tree trunk.
May 14th, 2017
Fav. Lovely riddle. Could it be reflected from a large glass window?
May 14th, 2017
@veengupta nope. No windows at all near it. During the day I could find no reflection area or light cast in that direction. Soooo weird!
May 14th, 2017
@terryliv Haha! This is such an interesting thread. I like to think it is a ghost, much more interesting.
May 15th, 2017
@onewing glad I am not the only 'photo-stalker' !! I Google mapped as well & saw a statue set back from the road out of the line of sight, next to the Festival Cafe. Her arms are held in the same way & I just assume it is light from the garden at night & so would have a strong reflection in the wet pavement at night? https://www.google.com.au/maps/@44.2411445,5.0751534,3a,61.7y,240.74h,84.55t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sPZvpVTa5KqEAAAQXR3iBRg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

@ltodd @onewing
You two are really helpful. I took a look at the view from Google Map (it's a 2014 image). That statue would have been to my left and behind essentially two walls between the statue and the reflection, so I don't think it could have been that statue. BUT, here's where it gets creepier -- that statue isn't there, as far as I remember (will check on the 22nd when we're back there). So, while she does look similar in form, it makes me wonder what happened to her!

Wonderful image!
