St. James is the town on Beaver Island. It was, at one time, a busy fishing village and now is the site of the Community Center, Shamrock Bar & Restaurant, the Mormon Print Shop which is now the history museum, McDonough's Market (the only grocery store), a few art galleries, a public library, Daddy Frank's Ice Cream shop, a water sports shop or two, a maritime museum, Toy Museum & Shop. These shops, a few churches, and some homes line the harbor on the northeast side of the island. With the end of summer, population drops from 2500-3000 people to 500 or so. It's very quiet in town these days!
Beautiful processing Taffy! It all sounds so quaint. Winter must be very quiet on the island and I suppose it must be harsh weather? Those 500 or so who are left over winter must be hardy souls! Do they get cut off and have food shortages? Fav!
@tunia Yes, I'm sure they are thrilled! It's interesting to see the hierarchies on the island residents: (a) the descendants of the original 5 Irish families who settled the island after pushing the Mormons out (part of the island history), (b) full-time residents, (c) seasonal residents, (d) summer folks, (e) renters for a few weeks, and (f) day-trippers.
