I have no idea what these little fungi are but they looked to me like an alien family with little hats and curious eyes.

Hi Taffy, one of my favorites, I think those are "Indian Pipes" (Monotropa uniflora). So cool if you find them,... When fresh, the fragile stalks terminate in drooping bell-shaped flowers, usually white, but sometimes pink or even red. As the fruit capsules ripen (like yours), flowers point straight up for more effective seed dispersal, and the entire above-ground part of the plant darkens later to a dry deep brown.
