We had snow this morning so I took photos of it falling sticking to the side of the balcony glass. I then cropped it way down and turned it at a 90 degree angle where it looked like a series of ice formations. Then, I played with it a bit in textures and created a composite using a lighthouse image from 2015 and some textures. It was fun, and the Z7 allowed me to crop to a very tiny size. The ice formations are actually combined snowflakes!
Must be your 6100 has anew sibling. This works so well. The colors and textures are dreamily beautiful I like how you varied the blur on the crystals but I think it would work even better if you considered the line of sharp focus is relationship to the imagined front of the lens so blurring in front and in back with an area crossing horizontally in focus. Hopefully that makes sense
Did you get any native Z mount lenses with the Z7 or are you using your F mount lenses with the converter for the time being? I fancy getting one but all bar one of my F mount lenses are third-party lenses so won't work with the converter.
This is amazing stuff Taffy, like something out of sci-fi or the like. In terms of technique I rather like the way the slope on the 'ice' echoes the angle of the wall. But I can certainly see Jane's @jgpittenger point, my eye's not as good as hers.
@vignouse I bought the 24-70 and so far (a few days) really like it as a lens and the overall feel with the camera body. I have mostly Nikon lenses, so bought the adaptor. I'm keeping my 610 body for use with my 150-600 Tamron, and am a bit annoyed that the adaptor doesn't function with non-Nikon lenses, but in the end, think I'll be happy with the mirrorless. Over the next few years, I'm planning to get a Z-mount WA and telephoto, and am hopeful that the third party manufacturers will get the specs needed to create some options for us.
@golftragic@jgpittenger Jane, thanks as always for your thoughtful eye toward composition. I always learn from you! Marnie (and Jane), I actually did the focus so the angle was the same line as the frozen pier, but do see what you, Jane, mean about the imagined front of the lens. I hadn't thought about it while processing. Probably won't go back and rework as it was just something I was playing with while we were binge watching a TV series. But I learned from your comment!
@vignouse The Z6 is is coming out in the next few weeks. I decided to stay with the Z7 for the cropping options, but understand the Z6 to be faster shutter speed operation. And of course, less expensive. Good luck in your decision making -- I admit to being hooked once I rented it!
@taffy I'm thinking of the Z6 rather than the Z7 - it would be a sheer indulgence as I already have the Sony A7iii with 24-70 f/4, 50mm f/1.8 and 35mm f/2.8... who said Mr Gadget?
@vignouse Greatly appreciated reading this as I had been feeling strange about adding a second DSLR (and owning a simple P&S for city walks). Now I'm feeling VERY conservative and thrifty in terms of gear!
Looks great- it's so easy to get lost in the pleasure of building these composites. I think everything blends well here. I am finding myself trying to be more attentive as to how the pictures "go together" angles and such since it really helps with the cohesiveness of the whole thing. Beautiful work!
