It's exciting to be in Tanzania and our safari's first day did not disappoint. The four hour drive to Tarangire National Park gave us many windows into the markets that line the street, colorful clothing, goatherds and goat herders, cows and cow herders, families, cities, rural areas, and finally the park itself. So many photos, but this was fascinating and somewhat disquieting to have witnessed. A lioness peacefully strolling along. A family of warthogs hanging out not far away, but with wind favoring the lion so they were totally unaware. The lioness studies them for awhile, even sitting down and watching for a bit. Then suddenly moves and disappears out of sight. Several minutes later, back on the move, but carrying a baby warthog -- possibly back to her own cubs.
We have sporadic internet so I'm taking advantage of it tonight to post this.
Wishing all a happy new year.
What a fantastic image to have captured on your first day. I understand your sentiment about it being disquieting, a stark demonstration of the rules of nature. The lioness looks young. I love the context that you have given her. Wonderful.
What a fabulous image. Not so fabulous for the warthog but i am sure the babies of the lioness will be thrilled with lunch. We don't have any qualms about walking out of the supermarket with an oven ready frozen chicken so why would anyone be upset by this shot. Survival of the fittest in this world and it is such a hard life for any wild animal
@rosiekind Let me know if you want any tips of what I've learned about what I'm glad I have with me -- I can email you thoughts when I'm back. You will love it!! AND, btw, I am SO happy with my Z6. It's fate that the Z7 didn't work out -- much happier with the speed this one is capable of, and overall the functioning is working well with the sensor between the eyepiece and the LED monitor on the back. The kit 24-70 is perfect to go with the long telephoto -- and the 150-600 on my other camera has been critically important for most of the animal images.
@allie912 I'll be posting, I hope, along the way, but for sure when I get home. We worked with Amanda and Simba at African Scenic Safari and they have been wonderful in the way they have organized it and responded to our questions and what we hoped to include. We've liked our guide as well -- just starting but he's been terrific at spotting animals. It's not a photo safari -- my husband wouldn't have been interested in that, but I am not having any problems finding plenty of opportunities to photograph, and we are staying in tent camps so in the parks, most of the time (with beds and indoor plumbing) so sunrise and sunset is outside our door. It's only the two of us with a private guide, so I'm guessing you could ask them for specific types of opportunities. www.africanscenicsafaris.com
Wow. That is an amazing capture both of the lioness and of yours. I'm hoping you will have internet enough that we can all keep up with your safari . . . seems it's off to a good start!
Awesome capture. When you get back to your processing life, I might crop out the cloud top left...draws my eye out of the shot. What a story to get to watch unfold
While it's sad for the prey, the lioness must feed. It's the circle of life. Few people ever see this in person, even fewer manage to capture it as well as you did. Kudos, Taffy. Your photos never, ever disappoint.
Wonderful shot. Just fabulous. Tented camps are so wonderful. Hope you are enjoying the noises in the night! We had lions in camp and I didn't believe Hubby when he said what it was first time. I do now.
Great capture Taffy! Every minute of being on safari in Africa is an adventure. We were in So. Africa and Zimbabwe in 2015, sitting in thorn bushes while photographing the lions. Seeing your photos is bringing it all back. Can’t wait to see more of your amazing photos!
Happy New Year, Taffy!
Happy new year and enjoy Tanzania
Happy New Year :)
