First, thank you so much for your wonderful remarks about my two posts thus far. I'm responding as a I can but realistically will remain behind until our return mid-month.
This post is from the Ndutu area near the Serengetti where we are staying in a tent camp for three nights. The highlight of this area is the wildebeest return from the northern Serengetti for calving season. This migration is in contrast to the one you often see in photos of wildebeest crossing a huge river, jumping over one another with crocodiles waiting for the pick. That happens in March through July (about). This one is more subtle but just as imposing -- across the plains we are seeing thousands of wildebeest, many forming lines as far as the eye can see as they march south. There are also thousands who appear to be hanging out along the way and playing or resting. When the calves are born and their spring comes, this entire population disappears north leaving the vast plains feeling fairly empty in contrast (but still lots of other wildlife).
And just as an aside, in addition to these we spent this morning watching cheetah, a pride of lions, giraffes, etc. It's all otherworldly compared to Chicago!
What an absolutely awesome trip you are having. This photo is quite amazing and, as you say, a different take on the Wildebeest migration from the one normally portrayed.
Truly amazing images you are capturing! Another layered shot that has a whole layer of animals, and the dust they kick up and the sheer numbers makes us feel the power of their presence. I couldn't help but laugh a your tag about dust on everything!
You must be very pleased that you are seeing and capturing such great scenes. It makes me feel even more excited when I think that I will be in the Masai Mara very soon. To me, it's a dream come true and I am really enjoying your photos. Fav
This sounds absolutely amazing, what an adventure you are having! At first I thought these guys were running straight at you, but I realise they are moving away. What a tremendous sight.
I’m so in awe of these experiences you are having - what a trip of a lifetime! I know you will continually soak up every moment you are able. The power is felt so clearly - I can almost hear the roar!
Oh wonderful - brings back so many memories of our safaris. Just my absolute favourite place to be. Have a wonderful, wonderful time and this is just lovely.
@stray_shooter I wish I were going to see the river crossing, but that doesn't happen till after calving when they return to the northern Serengeti in March. We're now in the Serengeti and they haven't quite arrived here yet in droves, but we know they are on their way!
