Jeeyoon Kim -- https://www.jeeyoonkim.com -- was the star of tonight's gala. If you are inclined, check out the link which has a sample of her amazing talent. While not a particularly strong photo, I thought you might be interested in the Community Center's auditorium and the very intimate setting it provides for us to hear performers who have played at venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York. I cannot quite get over how lucky we are to have this festival each year.
Lessons learned from the two gala photography events:
1. Event photography is a challenge -- I have renewed respect for those who make their living this way.
2. Event photographers get to attend rehearsals and that is a major perk! Today while on site to figure out lens and settings to use tonight, I spent an hour with essentially a private performance as Ms. Kim played two of her numbers for the sound folks. I was literally the only audience there!
3. People are remarkable gracious despite intense pressures that come with performing and preparing all the aspects of performance.
4. Technically, it's clear that lenses, ideally telephotos, with apertures in the 1.4 - 2.8 range are needed for this low-light work. We all know what that means in terms of costly lenses!
Fantastic image on black. I'm impressed at your ability to deal with this challenge. It would totally freak me out, but you're doing a great job! So glad you get a couple of perks too!
this is great on black - maybe if you were zoomed in just a little when taking it, but you covered that in your talk about the expense of lenses. all up another great result!
Fabulous.... My mind is wondering.... do you have Light room? can you flip it? so that that she is on the left and the audience on the right? I keep being drawn to her and the light, wondering whether eyes would wander through the photo better if the other way round? You've dealt with the lighting so well. Inspiring.
Being the only audience at rehearsal is very cool! Challenging environment for sure, but a lovely image and nice to see the intimacy of the venue. Looks a great place for a performance.
Well I hope you get paid at the end & can afford one of the lenses you would like...tell them you need it for next year!
I think you are a fabulous event photographer! Loving this one...the gradual progression from the dark end to the beautiful intimate lighting of the singer in her red dress! Fave!
Another beauty Taffy. Maybe this wouldn’t make sense for showing the purview but I wonder re cropping off a bunch on left leaving maybe a square to give the sense of the intimacy between performer and audience. The getting to go to the rehearsals sounds fabulous though I bet you are more than exhausted
Great low-light capture! What an interesting opportunity for you to be part of the music festival as the official photographer. And they’re so lucky to have you and your keen eye providing images of the event!
The lighting really demonstrates a sense of intimacy with the audience. I like Jane's idea of trying 2 crops. The times when I have tried to do events (such as graduations), I have rented the high dollar lenses with the wide apertures, but it sure would be nice to have one to pull out of the bag, as needed! :)
@rosiekerr@jgpittenger Turned out the square was too chopped feeling, but the 4 X 3 worked perfectly for the intimacy you were suggesting. And, I should have rented the 70-200/f2.8 that I used to own and traded in (until this, hadn't had a good use for it in several years).
well this is brilliant. I love the suggestion of the audience, the composition and the spotlight on the performer with her red dress. It is very dramatic.
I absolutely love this shot. The lighting is wonderful, giving us a view of the audience, but the focus is definitely on the performer. Nicely composed. Fav
