Securing the City by taffy

Securing the City

Like many places around the country today, we are seeing ongoing protests along with outsiders and opportunists destroying property and looting. While we have curfews starting at 6:00, it felt quite safe this afternoon for a walk. All bridges across the Chicago River are up to make it more difficult to get into the city - I went as far as I could to take this shot. The sound was surreal as all you can hear is the clanging of the 'bridge rising' alarms which never stop. If interested, I posted a video on FB looting down the south fork of the river (this view is the main fork to Lake Michigan): https://www.facebook.com/taffy.raphael/videos/10221088232049465/
You can hear what it sounds through this link.
Wishing safety to all those in areas of conflict.
Verrrry interesting

A very compelling image. I wish Dallas had bridges that could be raised. 😥
June 1st, 2020
@summerfield No, we don't hear them from our place.

How sad for you all.

Amazing image!

A stunning....and unusual view of the downtown area. It's an interesting strategy to keep the peace. I was going to congratulate you on the great shots that the mirrorless camera takes....and then I see it's an iPhone shot. Head slap!

A wonderful capture and amazing to see all those bridges. Hope it ends soon, such difficult times.

Gosh what a scene taffy!! How awful got you and your city to be going through this, stay safe
June 1st, 2020
Good heavens - what an awful situation when they have to use the bridges up to isolate areas from the demonstrations/riots . It all seems to be very worrying. I hope your lovely city stays safe. :

@stray_shooter I thought it safest to only carry the phone as I didn’t know who I might encounter. Worked out ok but would have liked having the camera instead.

A beautiful capture of the scene , but the clanging sounds are most ear-splitting and disturbing ! - stay safe ,my friend ! fav

Amazing capture. The film is impressive. I watch with great fear what is happening in the USA. Stay safe.

Wow what an image Taffy! How scary for you all! I have seen what’s happening on TV and have been horrified at such destruction all over the US! I hope none of my favourite buildings in Chicago get destroyed! Just hoping and praying that a peaceful solution can be found before anyone else get killed! I think you are right not to take your camera out with you but please take care and stay safe! Xx

we hate what is happening in your country now. I have a niece on the covid19 front line in Minneapolis...who lives quite close to where the riots are. We pray she will be safe. She is who they will meet if they are in dire straits and find themselves in the ICU. Stay safe!

A beautiful capture! Horrible what is happening! Sacramento is going through this too and I wish we had a curfew posted. My son is currently downtown protecting and serving as looting, defaming, setting fires, breaking windows and stealing is taking place. It is going to be a very long night...

Amazing photo and amazing video! What’s going on in the US is scary and awful!
June 1st, 2020
A very scary time for you all - stay safe. I looked at the video - must be terrible having that constant noise, especially if you happened to live nearby.

That sound would drive you crazy if you lived close by methinks! Fabulous shot but oh, what unsettling times. As if you didn't have enough to worry about already!

Fantastic capture & idea!! Fav

Fav. This picture should make part of modern history of your area. It is beautiful and scary at the same time when you know what's going on. I will not point fingers at anyone but all this could have been avoided if the police have acted better than they did.

Beautiful capture and documentary shot

Scary time to live in the city. But then isn't that most times for blacks and others.
June 1st, 2020
please stay safe - such frightening times
June 1st, 2020
Scary times for sure... excellent composition and the lifted bridges add interest.

What an incredible shot.

The raising of the bridges certainly captured my eye - but then to read why is quite terrifying. it is so sad and unbelievable what is happening in the USA. Please all stay safe fav photo

What a worrying time for you all. Hope you stay safe.
June 1st, 2020
wow - never seen all the bridges up like this - nice capture - you have to feel like a bit of a photojournalist now-a-days :)
June 1st, 2020
I recognised this straight away as our hotel when I stayed in Chicago overlooked these bridges. I am sorry to hear that you have all this trouble and hope you stay safe
June 1st, 2020
Oh my, that is so interesting looking. We've had problems here, too, in the city and have had curfews.
June 1st, 2020
Bridge lifts are a sign of spring in Chicago for me- when people take their sailboats from winter storage and move them along the river to their lakefront slips. This is beautiful with the raised bridges, the river and the buildings. Please keep safe, Taffy.

What a arresting view of the city with the bridges raised to prevent entry. It’s like medieval times when they raised a bridge over the moat to the castle to stave off invaders.

Love your city shots...Great lines, composition
June 1st, 2020
A fabulous image but so scary that these measures need to be taken to protect the city from marauding mobs. The event that started this is unforgivable, but the rioters are doing isn't going to make things better. Stay safe Taffy

Very interesting information to go with this shot. One bad occurrence to another for you there at the moment. Your image itself is amazing.
June 1st, 2020
Terrible for America. These are historic times. A fascinating image which brings home your situation. Stay safe.

June 2nd, 2020
This just brings tears to my eyes. What a sad state of affairs.
June 2nd, 2020
@jgpittenger We're fine right now -- the city section where we are is so quiet as so much is closed off. Unnerving, but feels pretty safe.
June 2nd, 2020
Oh, dear. Predictable, but so very sad all around. I am very glad you could get out and about, though! That camera on your iPhone is amazing.
June 2nd, 2020
The sound would really become annoying after a while. Great photo of the bridges being up
June 2nd, 2020
