This exhibit of artistically rendered styrofoam cups was quite moving. Curated posthumously in honor of his mother, the son collected cups his mother --an artist confined to a nursing home -- had decorated over time during her stay. These are only a few of the over a hundred she created and he had saved. Each one in the exhibit was beautiful, but it had the impact of scenes I've seen on prison walls, where the prisoner marks off each day with a line until the wall is covered. A talent that sought outlet when her only canvas was her daily cup of water/coffee/tea.

This is very moving Taffy! How sad when age imprisons us. How lovely that her son was able to keep her work and share it in this way. I wonder did she choose to use the cups as her medium or if in fact it was the only thing she had to draw on?
Wow, that really is poignant! Thank you for sharing this beautiful artistic tribute! Also, if you had not pointed out that they were styrofoam cups, I might have missed it because at first glance they look like beautifully decorated ceramic pots! Interesting thing about perception....and, I am really touched that the son collected all these cup that others would have thrown into the trash!
how wonderful and bitter sweet. Clearly a great artist. It's lovely that she had the ingenuity to use the cups. They are beautiful and certainly tell her story
What a beautiful tribute to his mother. The cups display wonderfully interesting and intricate designs, I am really intrigued by the story behind the image. Thank you for sharing this :)
What a beautiful tribute to a fantastic artist. I also thought they were ceramic cups. That they were made from everyday Styrofoam cups makes them even more precious and beautiful.
Glad you shared this, it reminded me of some of the art produced by prisoners of war in WW2 - a touching reminder of the indomitability of the human spirit and its capacity to find beauty in the most unlikely of circumstances.
Isn't that amazing? The desire to create is really in all of us and it has to come out somewhere. I'm glad he never stopped her from drawing on the cups! Beautiful display and lovely shot.
@voiceprintz I really was moved by this exhibit and so glad you called it to our attention. I hope you made it home in time -- it was a great afternoon.
I love the lighting you've captured as well as the shallow depth of field. Terrific shot!
