I was experimenting with second curtain flash. I can never quite get the effect that is in the tutorials. Still, I ended up with some interesting die images. I think this is going to be a series similar to what I challenged my get-pushed partner to do.
This is fascinating. There is some kind of mystery coming from the semi-transparency of the die and from its red aura. I appreciate that this picture is made with three colours only.
@sprphotos@farmreporter My description was a little misleading regarding the tutorial. I was just working from memory about what I had read in the past. I did find this article on DPS: https://digital-photography-school.com/flash-action-photos-with-second-curtain-sync/
The second-curtain sync is a setting on your camera for when the flash fires. It sets the flash to fire at the end of the exposure time.
For my photograph, I had the die spinning on the back of a black book. I started by experimenting without the flash to get the exposure right for the blur. I wanted to use a fairly long exposure and a small aperture. The long exposure was for the blur. The small aperture was because of the unpredictability of where the die was going to settle once its spin stabilized.
I did a little post processing to darken the background.
Good for you to experiment with.
Please tag me as well as Sylvia!

Really good to know.
