This fellow was drumming away on one of the trees out the back of Rohan and Sally's place a couple of days after we arrived. It is the first woodpecker I have seen. He was around for a couple of hours and then disappeared and we never saw him again.
Can someone enlighten me as to what species of woodpecker he is?
And I can never hear mention of a woodpecker without remembering this stupid song from the late 1940s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jc0Uytp0R3c
We were camping at Kirra on the Gold Coast when I was pre school and every morning at about 7:00, they would play it over the loud speakers in the camp ground. How bad is that? It has been stuck in my head ever since.
Just going back over some of the earlier pics from our US visit
Not familiar with this bird, but have checked my field guide. I am guessing it is a Red-breasted Sapsucker (a kind of woodpecker.) Pretty limited range...just appears along the west coast of USA and Canada.
Did you ever get the Woody the Woodpecker cartoons? (And I'm not trying to be funny) He kind of resembled this guy and according to my in depth research (looking it up on Wikipedia) Woody was based on an acorn woodpecker and also a pileated woodpecker, whatever that is.
Oh, crap I just clicked on your link and realized that is the Woody Woodpecker theme. Nevermind.
