This guy looks rather pleased with himself doesn't he.
The Komodo Dragon is the largest lizard in the world. They can reach over 3 metres in length and can weigh up to 70, 100 or 140 kgs depending on which book they read while growing up. I think that with their muscular body shape and length, they would certainly weigh more than 70kgs.
The Komodo is an apex predator and live on only 4 of the smaller islands of the Indonesian archipelago including the island of Komodo.
I had previously thought that the Komodo's bite was deadly because of the bacteria in its mouth caused by its eating carrion but in trying to find out their size, all of the articles I saw said that they had poison glands in their mouth which allowed poison to enter its prey through the open wound. Any lizard experts out there??
Taken during a visit to Australia Zoo (Steve Irwin's zoo) in September.
Nice shot Terry. I didn't know about the poison glands either and I certainly wouldn't want to get close enough to one to find out if the problem was poison or bacteria.
