I was planning something else for tonight until I heard that the Story Bridge was being lit up in red tonight in memory of Daniel Morcombe. It was a no brainer what tonight's 365 pic was going to be. O/S viewers will have to Google Daniel Morcombe
It has been wonderful to see this monster put behind bars and perhaps finally the family can have some peace. They have been truly inspirational. This is a lovely tribute, this story has moved so many over the years.
An amazing tribute for Daniel & his family. Thanks Poppo for sharing it with us. We must protect our beautiful children as best we can. RIP Daniel. Great captures too!
It's a beautiful scene; the red lights on the bridge, their reflections in the water, the darkening sky. If only it wasn't necessary to memorialize a young boy's tragic death. My heart goes out to his parents. A fav in honor of Daniel and in appreciate of your sharing this thoughtful scene with us.
The Daniel Morcombe case (initially disappearance then suspected murder then murder) captured everyone in Oz's attention. After he disappeared in 2003, it was 8 years before an arrest and then another 3 years before the trial. However what may not have come out in your reading of the reports and what really left everyone in Oz in awe was the way his parents, Bruce and Denise and their other two boys handled the situation and conducted themselves during such devastating and tragic circumstances. During that time, his parents made sure no-one ever forgot Daniel.
An ordinary family from Woombye in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, they turned Daniel's disappearance and later murder into a crusade to educate young children in recognising and dealing with the dangers of the world out there. They sold their home, set up the Daniel Morcombe foundation and travelled Oz taking their message to school children everywhere. How they did it is way beyond mine and I think most people's comprehension. They are the most inspirational family you could ever wish to see. What I think makes his loss all the more devastating was that Daniel was a twin. You can imagine the effect it had on the twin brother left behind.
Why Red? At the time Daniel was abducted and murdered, he was wearing a red T shirt and the Morcombes adopted red as the symbol of Daniel and to remind the public of what had happened to their son. In all pics of the Morcombes, you will notice that they are always wearing something red - and usually everyone else around them is also. Hence the red lights on the Story Bridge.
A beautiful photo and tribute Poppo. The Morcombe family have shown incredible strength. I just hope that Cowan gets his real justice in jail. I fav to remember.
Hi Poppo. I didn't realise they lit up the bridge last night, lovely idea. (My husband drove over it on his way home from work but prob didn't realise either!) I haven't seen your project before but recognised the landmark and POV (I think I took a few from about there a few years ago). I too am impressed with the Morcombes' conduct during all of this and for their persistence with the case - I think it sends a message to many would-be criminals when people are relentless and vocal in their pursuit of answers and justice. I had the pleasure of meeting Paul Stanley (father of Matt Stanley who was killed at a party a few years ago), who also does amazing work in the community - he was talking to groups of students about safe partying etc. I have utmost respect for these people.
Thank you for the additional information on the story. I was amazed at the time between Daniel's disappearance and a conviction date. That's a long time to hold out for answers and justice.
@milaniet@ribbet9@landownunder@aliha@jdcamdoc@lyndemc Thanks once again everyone. One line from Bruce Morcombe's Victim Impact Statement read out in court as a prelude to sentencing, I think sums it all up. Addressing Cowan, Bruce Morcombe said "You picked on the wrong family". @lyndemc Apparently the case was in danger of going off active investigation a couple of times but the Morcombes just wouldn't let it happen. Every October now there is a Day for Daniel attended by thousands of people and everyone dresses in red of course. It was this sort of activity that kept it going. In the end it was an undercover police sting that would stretch the imagination of even Hollywood that finally nailed Cowan.
@aliha Hi Alison. Yes it was taken from a small park in New Farm. We arrived at the park just after 6:00pm and as we were driving up, the lights were blue and I thought "Ah S..T". Then while we were looking, they changed to green and then red. Channel 7 and the ABC were both in the park with us and a few other people.
Great reflection and night scene.
Off to google Morcombe.
