A Refugee

The Kookaburras seem to be universally disliked by other birds and when one is around, it is hounded continuously, especially by the butcher birds.
This fellow was around yesterday and the butcher birds gave him hell. He returned today and was smart enough to come straight to the kitchen window where he happily devoured a few snacks free from the attention of the other birds. I have no idea how he knew to come to the window.
Love the close-up. I wonder why the other birds dislike them?

Just a very clever kookaburra :) Why do other birds dislike them? Fav

Great close up, Terry. Maybe they other birds don't like the noise?

Terrific shot! They probably hate them because the kookaburras eat their chicks. Fav

Beautiful shot and they are very clever birds aren't they. We have one who I am sure would move in the house if I let him.

Apparently he's a very smart Kookaburra, figuring out to come to the window for a snack. I don't need to say how envious I am of this arrangement you have with the wild birds, but I will. I'm so jealous!! Beautiful picture of this handsome bird.

Looks like he has been eating carrion - quite a bloody beak there! Good shot - they know where to find food - don't be surprised if he starts knocking on your door!

@mjalkotzy @888rachel No doubt that is part of the story - but so do Crows, Currawongs, Magpies and even Butcher Birds themselves but none of them get the same treatment from the other birds as the Kookaburra. Possibly it is because these other killers are not as proficient as the Kookaburra or perhaps it is the only one that will take the Butcher Bird chicks and the BBs are better at mounting a defensive attack. It's all very interesting. I will post a bad photo of the Kookaburra being attacked by a Butcher Bird.

I wonder why they are so hated by other birds. He's innocent looking enough but has quite the Beak on him. Amazing he returned after being so tortured. Lovely image. FAV
