I have never seen so many kookaburras in one place as we had in our back yard this morning. There was actually 8 of them but one refused to come down and join the rest of them for a snack.
So what is a gathering of kookaburras called? A giggle? A cackle? A joke? A snicker? A chuckle? Well unfortunately, according to Prof Google, it's a flock. How boring is that? If ever a bird deserved its own title for a gathering, it's the kookaburra.
What a wonderful gathering Terry!! A lovely lot of visitors to your garden. I didn't know the "camp" song Taffy @taffy was talking about but Barb has just been singing it to me!! Hope you and Rhoda are well? Fav for this lovely image!!
Wow, what a gang. We have six that turn up all together occasionally, but usually it is four at a time. They are called Onewing (because she has got one wing floppier than the other), Squawk because every time he turns up that is what he says. One Eye because I think he was in a fight with his brother when he was very tiny and has a bung eye. and SOS because he is son of Squawk and he makes a hell of a racket. The others who turn up are just blow ins.
I think you will need a butchers shop to feed this lot.
Fantastic sight first thing in the morning beautifully captured in all their glory Terry, I would have gone for a Cackle of Kookaburras as it would fit the definition " raucous clucking cry of a bird" Flock is far to mundane for them:)
What a trip... I've never seen one but in grammar school we would sing a song about a kookaburra that sat in an old gum tree and laughed, laughed, laughed... fave!
