Comet NEOWISE by timerskine

Comet NEOWISE

The Missus and I got up at 4am and headed out to see Comet NEOWISE and we were not disappointed. This was my first (and best) shot and is SOOC.

To see this comet (if you're in the northern hemisphere), you have to be up well before dawn. This is a drag since it's July and the sun comes up awfully early. You need to be in a place where you can see the northeast horizon. To find NEOWISE, look halfway between north and east, and about 10 degrees above the horizon. 10 degrees is the height of your fist with your arm outstretched. So, look NE, extend your arm, clench your fist with your thumb on top, and the comet should be right there. It's visible with the naked eye, but if you have binoculars or a long lens, it is spectacular. DO NOT MISS IT!
Wow! That's quite incredible to capture a comet. I've never seen one and getting up at 4am to do so is some commitment. Glad it paid off.

Well done to you Tim. I see that it was an 8 second exposure so I presume you used a tripod? I get notifications from NASA when the International Space Station is coming over and it's always at around 3 in the morning (for about 6 minutes) so I snooze through it! However, I was awake one night last week and just happened to gaze out at the right moment to see it gliding across from West to East. I've got an app. installed (free) called Stellarium that shows all and everything that will be seen in the night sky - well worth downloading.

@timerskine very cool. I read about the comet and thought, hmmm. get up early? I saw the one whose name started with an H in the 1990's; definitely a memorable sight. We're get-pushed partners this week. I really love the elk picture. Something about the lighting reminds me of murals or placements or some kind of nostalgic art that I can't quite put my finger on. I read your profile would like to challenge you to do an indoor flower photo.

@francoise Thank you! The elk photo was almost a freak thing. There is a 10' tall perimeter fence around the depot and the observation platform provided doesn't let you really see over it. I held my camera over my head, pointed it at the elk and took several shots.

For your Get Pushed challenge, I am giving you "high key."

@jon_lip Thanks, Jon. Tripod? Oh, yes. I have a different app called "Mobile Observatory" which has both free and premium. I forked out the $7.95 for the whole thing and it is also very good.
