I grew up in the city. For me, the red-winged blackbird and its distinctive high-pitched call was my signal that I was out in the countryside, and I have always loved them. Despite my fondness for them I have never been able to get a good picture of one. Until today.
The Old River Channel Wetlands at Dutch Gap Conservation Area is filled with them during the spring and summer but a good picture has always eluded me. But I managed to get this one as it flew through the tuckahoe (green arrow arum).
He looks very sharp, especially at 1250th of a second.
