Spitfire! by timerskine

Spitfire!

The Missus and I spent the day volunteering at the Military Aviation Museum. Each Saturday during the summer we have a program called 'Summer of Flight' where one or more of our planes is showcased with a brief lecture and a flight demonstration. It's super cool and very popular.

This week was the 71st anniversary of the end of the Battle of Britain (September 15, 1940). We honored the heroes of that battle - the pilots of the Royal Air Force Fighter Command.* We flew both our Supermarine Spitfire and our Hawker Hurricane. While the Spitfire received all the acclaim as the hero of the battle due to its incredible good looks and grace in flight, the workhorse of the fight was the less glamorous Hurricane. Hurricanes accounted for 55% of Nazi aircraft shot down, compared to 42% for the Spitfire.

I managed to get this shot of the Spitfire with my Canon G7X pocket camera.

*When Winston Churchill said, "Never in the field of human conflict have so many owed so much to so few" these pilots were the few to whom he was referring.
