I saw these double-crested cormorants hanging out on a fallen tree limb in a pond. It was a rare opportunity, not because there aren't many cormorants around (there are plenty) but because I managed to get a long series of shots in which all of them had their heads up and none of them was preening.
The title of the picture comes from the collective name: a group of cormorants is called a gulp. If you've ever watched them feed you'd understand why.
The perfect collective noun for these critters - thanks for telling us that. I love the limited range of colours in this - it lets you easily notice their orange bills.
@robz You should see their eyes! Aquamarine! In bright sunlight they are dazzling. And while I haven't seen it yet, all the experts report the inside of their mouths are bright blue.
