I was watching this American kestrel (my favorite raptor) and watched it land on a dead tree trunk. I was just raising my camera to take a picture when it took off. How this shot came out at all is beyond me, er, I mean, it took every bit of skill I have as a nature photographer to capture this image.
This picture was taken at Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge during one of their "Open Roads Days" where areas of the refuge, normally off-limits to the public, are opened to the public.
