Rakes Mill by timerskine

Rakes Mill

The Missus and I went exploring a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) for a couple of days during the autumn color change.

Rakes Mill, the site of a long-ago mill on a stream, was the furthest south we ventured since we had been here a few months ago when venturing north on the BRP from Fancy Gap, Virginia. But I stopped to get this shot so that I could test out my new neutral density filter. The ND filter allowed me to take an exposure of several seconds without blowing out the highlights and, more importantly, giving the water flowing over the little dam built by Mr. Rakes that silky quality.

It took us quite a while to go just a few miles on the BRP because we live by 2 hard, fast rules when visiting a National Park. National Park Service Rule #1: If the NPS made a road for you to drive on, you drive on it; it's there for a reason - find it. National Park Service Rule #2: If the NPS made a turnout, turn out, park, get out and look at why they put it there. We are never disappointed following these two rules.
Like the waterfall, picture is complete with the colorful autumn leaves.
