The James River originates in the Allegheny Mountains and runs 350 miles to the Chesapeake Bay. The city of Richmond, Virginia, was founded at the point where ocean-going ships of the 1600s couldn't move further up river, and goods coming from or going to areas further inland had to be portaged. These rocks show why.
The Missus and I went to Pony Pasture Park and wandered along the southern bank of the James on a glorious autumn day.
