47 Bernina Express in Winter

Bernina Express in Winter.

The Rhätische Bahn Bernina Express panoramic train, from Chur in Switzerland to Tirano in Italy, is the highest mountain railway in the Alps.

The section between Thusis and Tirano has been classed as an UNESCO World Heritage site.

Taking tourists from winter glaciers to summer palms in around four hours, the train passes through 55 tunnels and crosses 196 bridges.

The Brusio Circular Viaduct, shown here, is a masterpiece of bridge engineering, built to limit the gradient of the line to just seven per cent.
