90 Marseille, France

Marseille, or Marseilles in English, is a major port city near where the River Rhone enters the Mediterranean in the South of France.

Said to be France's oldest city, Marseille was founded by Greek traders some 2,600 years ago.

You can visit Marseille at any time of the year, but be sure to visit the old port area when you do.

La Samaritaine is a popular Marseille brasserie located at 2, Quai du Port; a great spot to sit, relax, enjoy a drink and people watch from an outside table.

To the east, on the outskirts of Marseille, are the Calanques.

Stretching from the small fishing village of Callelongue, as far as Cassis, the rugged coastal area is interspersed with small fjord-like inlets.
