Yesterday we witnessed a spectaculer performance from this Praying Mantis. She was attacked by a willy wagtail and knocked off the verandah rail onto the floor. She immediately took on a defensive stance - front arms raised high in the air, wings spread wide and mouth a gape. The willy continued to try to attack but the mantis kept its eye right on that bird and faced him square on no matter what direction it came from. The willy gave up and the mantis crawled onto a potted parsley where it slowly recovered from its close encounter with death.
Fantastic shot
... and thanks... I just had to "help" make a praying mantis for a school project. Thankfully, there looks to be some similar elements to the real thing!
