In 1972 as the President of a small group of young parents struggling to find kindergarten spaces for our children in a rapidly growing Gladstone, we acquired this tiny little block of land hidden in a gully in one of the new suburbs. It did not enter my head that our efforts would be serving my great grandchildren. While enjoying Grandparent's Day with Layni I felt rather proud as I reflected on the number of children who have entered Koolyangarra. So little has changed from our original layout every thing has simply matured under the loving care of our long serving Director. However this space age monster has brought us into the twenty first century replacing a little old fishing boat which had been originally donated to us and ended it days on this spot.
The aboriginal name we chose for the Centre, Koolyangarra, meaning 'meeting place for happy children' is so apt. The tiny little grounds are a real adventure playground with opportunities for developmental play around every corner of its winding paths. I'm sure fairies live here sharing this mini-rainforest with the annual wave of children enjoying this exciting space. aug15words - playground
