Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers...Do you remember the rhyme? Pierre Poivre (Peter Pepper) is identified as the subject of the rhyme. He was a French horticulturalist who became administrator of Isle de France (Mauritius) in 1760s. He established the Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens which claim to be the oldest botanical gardens in the Southern Hemisphere. His statue stands in the gardens near this grand pond of giant water lilies.
That is fascinating to me. Love histories behind fables and nursery rhymes
