Hazard reduction burns are a feature of valley life at this time of year. Farmers do a control burn at the end of winter as soon as the first rains arrive. This removes the old dry grass and brings away a new shoot for cattle while protecting them from fires latter in the season when it is hot, dry and windy and hard to control.
