I went downtown yesterday hoping to get some shots of people hunkering into their jackets and rushing along, but I did not really get what I wanted. Next time I will go at rush hour when people are moving a bit faster and not shy of my camera. I did not stick around long as it was a tad chilly, I don't really mind the cold, but I could not keep my hands warm yesterday despite gloves, glove liners, and a heating pad, maybe it is because it is our first cold snap of the season. This was about the best of what I had, a bit miffed that I chopped her head off in the shadow, but otherwise I like it and happy to be back to my more normal style high contrast b&w.
It wasn't snowing when I took this shot, that is just blowing snow! It was windy! And as they say best viewed on black!
@ukandie1 I get where you're coming from. Personally I would have dodged as well. I pretty much do any editing I think may add in conveying my message but usually try to keep it photojournalistic as much as possible. The exception is my current OCOLOY project where SOOC is part of the challenge, but otherwise I'd be processing them. Here I think you got the right amount of dodging. Enough to hint at the face, but without giving it away nor pushing too far to unrealistic. If you had dodged the front of her coat just a whisker I probably wouldn't have guessed there was any dodging at all. Will enjoy following your progress with the processing you've been studying. :)
@dbj Ooops I had to delete my initial message as it did not make any sense, so let me try again. Thanks for the feed back, I did not think to do the front of her coat and can see how that would make it more natural.
Love how the sun makes the tips of her fur hood glow!! Yuck, makes me cold just looking at it and I'd never have known it wasn't snowing in this photo!! She really looks cold and every time I see someone in the cold with glasses I remember when I had a pair freeze to my face!!! I learned really fast to never wear wire rim glasses in the cold again!! FAV!
This shot came out beautifully. We were on the opposite side of the spectrum yesterday. It was 45 degrees here yesterday (113 F), I think I prefer the cold :)
I find it hard to take pics at this time of year, everyone and everything is so bleak and grey, plus I HATE the cold, roll on summer! Nice shot btw, I like the light on her fur hood.
Like the strong moody black emphasise the cold.. fav I saw an item on BBC Newsnight last night about Chicago during the Obama Presidency , I was reminded of your architecture pictures when the showed all those gleaming glass towers. Did look cold, the windy city eh....
Well captured and I love the falling snow. Pity you cut out the head in the shadow but this happens frequently to me. Difficult to control the camera with gloves on.
