NF-SOOC-September - Day 19: Get Pushed 112 - Rotten Apple

This image is for NF-SOOC-September - you can read more about it here: http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/23475/back-to-basics-who-s-up-for-a-big-challenge-in-september

It is also for Get Pushed week 112: my partner for this week, Joan @joansmor , said " I'm cheating: my challenge to you is to be a mentor. Take something I do badly and show me how it is done within the confines of your own monthly challenge."

Well as I am really Joan's mentor it is not cheating to want me to prove my credentials... challenging certainly, but not cheating ;-)

Joan and I have worked some on selective focussing, so here is a shot which relies on differential focus and negative space to isolate its subject: it's also about using diagonal lines in composition, something else we have talked about.
@joansmor Hi Joan - here is a response to your challenge. We got back from holiday late yesterday evening and to day has been very busy. I found 10 minutes this evening before dinner and going out for a meeting to address your challenge. I leave you to decide if I have chosen well or not!

Great selective focus and use of the evening light and shadow

Take a bow. I have tried that diagonal line a couple of times since you pointed it out but I struggle the most with selective focus. Think with your guidance I am getting better but this is where I still have problems getting something connected to be if focus in the area you want it to be. Poor apples left on the tree to rot. Lovely rotten shot.

Really enjoying these shots from your personal challenge, they've all been quite special and this is right up there with the rest of them. To me it shows what can be achieved with a camera and a good eye

You put that spot of sunshine to good use by composing the image just so. More proof of your meticulousness in creating a photograph.

I feel badly that I've dropped out of the sooc challenge before it's completion but I'm glad I participated for the short time that I did. I have a new appreciation for getting it right in-camera and also for what's possible post-production. Thanks for the comments you continue to share a number of my photos. Your input is always appreciated.

I can appreciate the finer points of this shot, Richard and I have given it a fav because it such a good illustration for me of those important lessons on focus and composition.
