In a week where the emphasis for B&W February is the different kinds of light we might encounter in photography, I wanted to feature filtered or modified light. I'll explain what I mean: at this time of the year, the sun is very low in the sky and must shine though the earth's 'furniture' - be it natural or man made - rather than illuminating it from above as it would in high summer. Nowhere is this more evident where I live than in the forest where the light is not blocked by leaves, but must still filter its way through the branches leaving dappled patterns that are almost magical in their quality.
I love the picture and your explanation. Thanks so much for including your insight because it helps newbies like me understand the importance of light and how to use it.
When I am driving into work on the back roads I love noticing the light patterns in the woods. Another time when it is interesting is early morning or late afternoon in the summer when you get those lovely dappled spots of light dancing through the forest. When you drive a lot you take time to notice these things and find joy in them to make the trip less pedestrian.
What I most like about this shot is that the light you wish to illustrate is actually the main visual element in the picture! despite all those trees (which are conveniently uniform and undistracting to boot)
lovely dappled light indeed! i really struggle with this kind of shot in black and white... i have trouble trying to get the contrast my eyes look for... you seem to have mastered this nicely!
