Josselin by vignouse

Josselin

This is the town of Josselin in Morbihan, Brittany: located on the Nantes-Brest Canal; it is dominated by its magnificent château.

The first château on this site was a wooden construction built in 1008 by the Vicomte de Porhoët. When Olivier de Clisson became the owner of Josselin in 1370, he replaced the wooden structure with an imposing stone built château with no less than 9 towers, of which four remain. The château was partially destroyed in 1699 and remained derelict until 1799 when it was handed over to the Rohan family who began the huge task of renovation in 1850 to produce the building we see today. The Rohan family still own and live in the château which is open to the public; somewhat incongruously, it houses a museum of dolls and toys.

@maggiemae Thank you Maggiemae - I really struggled as to whether to post the main image in B&W or colour so I compromised a bit by removing the privacy option from my diary shot and posting that in colour. This is the rude functional. keep-out side of the château - the internal courtyard view and the gardens are magnificent. A visit is expensive so with only a half-hour to spare, I didn't bother today... one for the future!
