Quite a wide corridor between the plants. I remember seeing field after field of corn when we drove through France a year or two ago!

I totally misjudged that - the rows are 70cm apart and individual plants are 20cm apart in the rows.

Yes - a strip of bio-degradable plastic is laid down by a machine which also punches holes in it and plants a seed: the plastic retains moisture and warmth in the soil around the roots thus promoting growth.
