PLAY January - Nikon 50mm f/1.4G: A Remarkable Man
This is Alain Maignan - he's 62 years old and he's one of our local postmen. Physically he's quite a small man but in terms of vision, determination, courage and fortitude... he's a veritable giant.
In 2006 Alain made a non-stop solo voyage of the world in a small yacht without landfall or physical contact with any other living person. He did this from his own resources and the support of neighbours and friends.
In September he is is doing it again but this time the hard way - east/west - against the tides and prevailing winds. The voyage will take 11 months and he must take with him on board everything that he will need to survive for almost a year.
I pictured Alain this evening at a fund raising dinner in his home town of Beignon, where he made a point of speaking individually with each of the 300 guests.
Solitude may me a close friend and a worst enemy. One year without human (and land!)
contact are a challenge beyond imagination! And I felt proud of having completed my 365 project!!!
He makes me feel like such a wuss. well done to all of you who gather to help fund him.
Guess his motto is "if your dreams don't scare you , they are not big enough"
Striking portrait. Fav! A true and wonderful man from your description. May his second journey be a truly magnificent voyage. Greatly admire his courage.
@randystreat Actually Kathy, that's a great comment. There are people in life who do indeed look totally ordinary - insignificant even - but who do extraordinary things... that ought to encourage the rest of us!
