PLAY Feb - Fuji 18mm f/2: On Watch! by vignouse

PLAY Feb - Fuji 18mm f/2: On Watch!

Mitzi on duty in her favourite observation post, halfway up the stairs.

This is for my PLAY project - you can read more about it in my profile - where I'll be using a different prime lens for each month of the year: for February it's been the Fujinon 18mm f/2 on an APS-C sensor camera (today the Fuji X-Pro1) - the equivalent of a 28mm lens on a full-frame camera. Tomorrow we change lenses for the month of March.

This is also my final post for the Flash of Red 2017 challenge.
So very cute.

Absolutely the cutest! Dogs love to sit where they can see everything that going on. Our two are the same way.

Tell me why this is such a good shot, Richard. I like it very much, but can't analyse why! Fav

@yrhenwr That's a heck of a question! I don't know whether it's a 'good shot' or not, but I can tell you why for me it has a certain attraction. The subject is placed at the centre of a square frame which creates an equilibrium. That equilibrium is challenged by the opposition of the vertical lines and the diagonal which draws them together. The only place in the image where you can look and not feel unsettled is in the middle, at Mitzi. If you look anywhere else your eye is restless but the verticals and the diagonal act as leading lines that take you back to the centre every time.

Of course, I may just be talking pretentious twaddle ;-))

Mitzi looks to me as she is contemplating the huge leap downwards! Sweet picture, it has a lot of appeal.

@vignouse Neither twaddle nor pretentious, Richard.. you have explained it perfectly and in such a way that I can say 'That's it!' In the centre where the intersection of lines occurs, the only place she can be for comfortable viewing. I would add now that the direction of her gaze is parallel to the stairs so the viewer imagines what she might see at the bottom. Perfection! Thank you so much.

A smart lady, this Mitzi, she is hedging her bets. Simple but great. Interesting to read your analysis too.
