I had a nice, long lie-in this morning. It felt good waking up at almost midday - I haven't slept like that in ages! I later got a phone call from my friend John Wynn, who rang just for a chat and mentioned that he was doing some welding work this afternoon. I said yesterday that I planned on visiting a local windmill, but with the wet weather and boring grey skies I thought I'd visit John at work, knowing that I could get some interesting shots.
These sparks are tiny fragments of metal being ground away. I should have used my Canon 50mm lens, as it would have let in a lot more light and I would have captured this at a lower ISO. I'm still quite pleased with the shots I got though.
John is an experienced welder with many years of experience. I mention this because you may have noticed the lack of glove, and what you can't see is that he isn't wearing a helmet. Please don't try this at home kids!

with just 3 days of experience with a dslr, i really like reading your descriptions because you're almost always giving some sort of insight to your thought process for the shot. those technical specifics are helpful to build mental notes for future shots.
Great shot! Its funny the more experianced people get with something the less they think they need all those safety features. Glad your back on the mend by the way.
