Orchid

I stayed in today and played with my new camera, and remembered that I had not photographed my orchid lately, so here she is!

Thank you all so much for your kind comments on my test shots with the LX7 yesterday. I am feeling very comfortable with it already.
Beautiful work, Arthur - are you using the macro setting on the LX7?

@soboy5 ... Thank you Danny. Yes, I have been playing with the macro setting. This one was manual focus and cropped, and the African violet in my other album was macro autofocus. Both options seem equally capable of excellent results and I am very satisfied with the camera.

@wordpixman Glad you like it. I've been very happy with my LX3, it is my camera of choice when I don't feel like carrying the DSLR. I have read the LX7 can produce much more shallow dof than the LX3, due to its f/1.4 lens. Would love to see some examples of that when you get the chance.

@soboy5 ... Thank you Danny; certainly will, when I find a suitable subject. Initial peeks remind me of f/2 on 35mm film. I'll reserve final judgement until I can give it a proper test on a range of subjects but I have every faith in Leica optics. (I still have my 1939 vintage Leica with the trusty f/3.5 50mm Elmar but have not used it for many years!)

@wordpixman My father had a Leica M3 - wonderful camera, incredible optics. I love the Leica lens on my LX3, along with its build quality - the entire camera feels so solid and well built, much more so than my Nikon DSLR.

Lovely detail Arthur.

This is lovely, something I've tried unsuccessfully with orchids, think I might have to get one of these Lumix cameras! How does yours 'do' sunrise/sunset? My older Canon is good but the new one has no setting for sunset and I can't use it for that at all. (I'm not a very technical photographer!)

This is beautiful Arthur, you've sent me off looking at Lumix reviews! I need a new camera but the choices are too great, do I go DSLR, another Bridge, System or something like your Lumix!! I hate making decisions!

@quietpurplehaze ... thanks for your kind comment, Hazel. I have not tried the sunset mode on this new camera yet (for obvious reasons) but it is not strictly necessary because you will be able to get perfectly good results by simplyb reducing the expousre by about half to one stop (-0.5 to 1.0 ev) to prevent the reds becoming washed out, and tweaking the white balance to a 'cooler' setting to produce a warmer and more intense image. Worth trying; good luck!

@wordpixman Arthur thank you - I'll have a go but I think you don't realise quite how un-technical I am! I'll maybe ask our friend Julian (@glenmoor ) to help me put this into practice when we see him. I'm going to print off your comment and have a try anyway!
