A Paradise Lost

Parts of the seaside town of Jaywick on the Essex coast have been officially described in successive annual government reports since 2010 as the most deprived area in England.

Jaywick was developed in 1928 on fields and salt marshes unsuitable for agriculture, with cheaply built holiday homes for working class families from London, but they have over the years gradually become occupied as permanent homes, for which they were never designed, and have fallen steadily into disrepair despite efforts by the local council and government to re-house residents or improve the area, which is at considerable risk of flooding.

My view of the deserted beach at sundown today was the only thing worth looking at, but even that cannot be seen by the residents because the view from their low-lying homes is blocked by the sea wall built to protect them from all but the worst of winter storms.
Great colours and beautiful in its desolation

You've described jaywick very well. If you keep your back to the town and keep looking out to sea you could be anywhere.

What a beautiful photo! Could be a Turner!

An absolutely stunning sun-down creating such a wonderful sky reflected on the sea ! A sad tale of Jaywick --but your capture of the sea and sky is brilliant and as Jane @chimfa suggested a sky-scene in the Turner style !! A very Happy Christmas Arthur !

Great shot Arthur. Jay wick is such a sad place. My daughter trained to teach at the Coastal Academy there and there were lots of issues.

@fueast @cruiser @beryl @prttblues @mbemis ... Thank you all for contrasting the beauty and the beastly, and to @debbie3108 who knows the area and confirms my impression.
In reply to @cejaanderson I did not photograph the dereliction because it was just too depressing, but there are hundreds of images on thr internet if you Google Jaywick dereliction or Jaywick Sands.
Thanks also to everyone else who kindly cooented on my sunset shot ... @thresheg @soseema @voiceprintz @chimfa @beryl @wendyfrost @davydo @mittens @splishsplash @tosee @kimcrisp ...

Christmas wishes to you all, and may we count our blessings and think of those less fortunate.

@ceilidh ... Thank you Margaret. Your comment arrivedwhile I was writing the above. It is always very satisfying, though sometimes quite depressing, to have one's personal impressions confirmed by someone with closer knowledge.

It makes a lovely photo though.

A super image. I hadn't heard of Jaywick but now after doing the search on Google the photographer in me feels the need to go and visit.
December 24th, 2014
A very sad story Arthur but you've captured the scene beautifully.
December 24th, 2014
@candidzen ... I'm sure you would find countless photo opportunities there, Andy. The main problem would be finding an image sifficiently unique to stand out among all the rest.

@pusspup @thistle ... Thank you for enjoying and appreciating the beauty which lies hidden from so many people living right behind a foreboding sea wall.
