Everything You Enjoy Is On Santa Catalina

Just when you thought you knew all about design history, you learn something new. Turns out Otis Shepard and his wife Dorothy did all the graphics and marketing branding for Catalina Island in the 30s. Shepard was the art director for the Wrigley Chewing Gum Company and since P.K. Wrigley owned the island Otis and Dorothy worked on Catalina, too.

The posters, postcards, brochures and illustrations were all over the island. This photo was taken of a poster in the corridor of the post office with window reflections in the background. I absolutely love it. Maybe that's why it's always been a dream of mine to visit Catalina. I am a sucker for 1930's marketing.

From eyemagazine.com about this piece: Work by the Shepards for Santa Catalina Island, the Californian resort owned by P. K. Wrigley. From 1934-38 the Shepards spent most of their time there, helping Wrigley develop the island as a profitable holiday destination. Their design addressed every aspect of Catalina: typefaces, menus, signs, uniforms, fountains, pavings, tiles, murals and interiors. Nearly half a century later, Dorothy recalled: ‘In Catalina there was great freedom … We transformed the place. We entertained with the greats of Hollywood, and people from around the world enjoyed our rebuilt paradise.’

Very interesting history! And there is so much interesting history for such a small simple island!
