"Their wings beat so fast (in normal flight about 75 beats per second, and during courtship flights both ruby-throated and rufous hummingbird wings can beat 200 times per second!) that they make a humming sound." When I sit on our back deck waiting for a photo op I can actually hear the hummingbird's approach, the hum is that loud! Helps one to be more ready to snap a photo! LOL

" 'And the hummingbird's heart beats at astounding rates, typically 500 to 1,200 beats per minute, depending on level of activity.' Humans, by comparison, have a resting heart rate around 72 beats per minute. When ruby-throats are really exerting themselves in flight, their hearts race at top speed."
