Spoon River

At Bernadotte, Illinois. We went for a drive today and for lunch along the river.
Bernadotte is named for the French Marshal who later became King of Sweden. The town was first settled in 1826 and was known as Fulton. Bernadotte was a milling site for grist and saw milling.
It was considered as the site of the second capital of Illinois but lost out to Vandalia.
I am imagining the sound. Lovely shot.

Interesting. There is a Musée Bernadotte in Pau, in the south west of France, where we lived for several years. Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was born there. Seemingly he exhibited great military talent, rapidly rising through the ranks, and played a significant role in the French victory at Austerlitz. He was also nicknamed 'Sergeant Belle-Jambe' for his smart appearance! :-)

How interesting, I did not know where in France he was born. I first heard of him when I read “Desiree” over 40 years ago! She was his wife. It’s odd a tiny village in the US would be named after him but that’s what I’ve read.
