His first filet o’fish by johnfalconer

His first filet o’fish

My 13yo grandson caught his first fish with a handheld spear while snorkelling in Sydney Harbour a few days ago. This is therefore his first attempt at filleting a fish!!
Congratulations, hope he did well and it tasted good.

Awesome!

Everyone has to start somewhere, good on him for having a go!

How fabulous, good on him.

Ha ha ... my first thought was 'oh my god, that poor fish' ... then I read your text properly. Your grandson's spearing skills are obviously excellent, but he has a little way to go with the filleting! ;-)

Fab detail in this shot!

@jamibann
He absolutely needs to work on the filleting. There was hardly any edible fish left.

Good try

I agree with @jamibann

Well done him, but I guess he is better at catching than filleting.

Everyone has to learn..
wonderful to spear this fish while snorkelling.
December 8th, 2022
Wow, I’m sure he was excited to spear the fish. Well done.

Special

Good shot but I wouldn't want to do that. LOL
December 8th, 2022
Good for him. I hope he enjoyed the sport and the it's "fruit."
December 8th, 2022
Congratulations, he appears to be doing fine

Good for him. I'm sure he'll get better at it. What type of fish
December 8th, 2022
Great shot!
December 8th, 2022
well done! Am sure he was so proud
December 8th, 2022
looks so fresh.
December 8th, 2022
Very difficult, well done! Does he have a filleting knife?
December 8th, 2022
He will get the hang of it when he catches more!!
December 8th, 2022
Filleting a fish is not easy. I have messed up more than a few salmon. He will get better as he gets more practice. Good job on spearing the fish. That is such a cool way to catch a fish. My way is to set up the downrigger then sit back with a mug of hot coffee. It may have a little rum in it.

Practice makes perfect!
December 8th, 2022
Oh no, not for me. I would release the fish into the sea.
December 8th, 2022
Did he cook it too?
December 8th, 2022
It's not so easy and he seems to do fine. Way to go!
December 8th, 2022
Like the head the best. ( that say`s our cat)
But I prefer to bake the whole fish ( sometimes with, sometimes without the head).

… with grandpa to guide him

@rensala
No way. He is very independent.

@nigelrogers
He fried it in some butter.

@cdcook48
I’m with you. Catching something is a bit of a nuisance!

@busylady
No filleting knife.
